Resources Realized: 5 Social Media Tips for Non-Profits

Blue Bell, Pennsylvania – May 5, 2010
Every second of every day awareness is generated, loyalty is developed and conversations are facilitated through social media. Has your organization taken advantage of social media’s ability to reach and impact others?

Still maturing at this point, social media can cause an overwhelming wave of apprehension. Resources are limited within many non-profits and the management of social media is often problematic. However, there are several simple ways to utilize social media to share your stories and interact with your target markets.

Look before you Leap.
Monitor activity related to your cause and your organization. Additionally, take notes on successful non-profits using this marketing channel before diving in.

Establish a plan of action.
Sites like Twitter tend to be updated more regularly (every day) versus Facebook or blogs (once a week or a few times a month). Create a posting schedule and share the responsibility among members or volunteers. To succeed in social media, make consistent updates and monitor conversations for gems of insight.

Manage the effort.
Do you post news on your website? Or have a monthly newsletter? Leverage your existing content for social media networks and focus your efforts on the top social media sites. Several platforms are available to post a single batch of content to multiple social media sites at once.

Think Viral.
The more interesting your content, the more it will be shared and the further your reach will expand. Our recent Meals for Moms campaign included a customizable bouquet eCard that was posted and shared through social media because of its engaging nature. Use your website and social media sites to create awareness of your presence on other social media sites.

Benefit from corporate philanthropy.
Pepsi's Refresh Campaign and Chase Community Giving are examples of large scale sponsorship opportunities for non-profit organizations. Both campaigns include voting for non-profits that deserve donations on social media sites. Inviting your existing online and off-line network to vote and share vote requests with friends and family not only increases their chances of winning, but increases the awareness of your organization.

Social media provides a cost-efficient venue for non-profits to share their stories. Since non-profits rely on the loyalty of donors and support of volunteers, keep these groups in mind throughout your social media endeavors and stay top of mind.
