As is the case for any evaluation of this nature, it was important to identify the usability standards and tenets behind the recommendations that were made. We utilized two proven techniques to identify design and usability issues – a Heuristic Evaluation and Cognitive Walkthrough.
The Heuristic Evaluation determined the general functionality issues with the interface based upon a known set of usability principles. Through the Cognitive Walkthrough, we analyzed the usability of the interface based on the goals of the user, evaluating the ease with which users can accomplish their desired goal.
After assessing the overall usability and evaluating specific user behavior, we created a tactical roadmap for implementing these recommendations as well as redesigned the graphical user interface (GUI) and provided icon development. Next challenge: a User Change Management Program. Why? Because no matter how perfect a product may be, there is always resistance to change. The good news, however, is that it can always be minimized.
